It appears that SCCA road racing in the Southeast Division may be returning to some tracks as early as June. That will be welcome news for everyone. As we have been sheltering in place we have missed our time with our competitors and friends at the track. As one of the bylines of this website states “We came for the competition, we stayed for the people” now becomes even more appropriate today.  As we all begin to think about and plan the return to the track, remember that SCCA road racing is predicated on being "fun, fair and safe". It is incumbent upon all us to focus on the last item, being safe, as we make plans to return. We must consider our volunteers and workers in any planning. With the “graying” of the SCCA many of our volunteers fall into that target audience for the virus. Our workers not only think about themselves but also of significant others and family that they may be caregivers for.
Eric Prill, CEO of SCCA recently stressed the significance of this as well. Eric in his message challenged all drivers and crews at future events to volunteer to help as we get back to racing. So please consider volunteering at your next event. I believe you will find it very rewarding and you may make some new friends on a corner. Again, "We came for the competition, we stayed for the people”. Of course, as in racing, the road to the new normal is as much a test of focus and endurance. But, thankfully, we appear to be starting our engines.  Please be safe, stay healthy and look forward to seeing you at a race track this summer.
